Great Anniversary of Thang Long proposed to UNESCO agenda

Hanoi has submitted a proposal to the UNESCO to celebrate the Great Anniversary of Thang Long in order to broadcast the image of Hanoi to the world. Vietnamese Foreign Ministry has been lobbying the UNESCO to pass a resolution calling for UN members to jointly celebrate the Great Anniversary.

The UNESCO Committee of Vietnam has been canvassing the UNESCO Secretariat and formulating the draft resolution before proposing to the UNESCO General Assembly in October 2009.

It is expected that in 2010 there are two anniversaries: 1000th of Hanoi and 1300th of Japan's Nara. Besides, Foreign Ministry, in coordination with Hanoi authority, is lobbying the UNESCO to recognise the steles at the Temple of Literature as material heritage of mankind and to include them in the Memory of the World (MOW).

The success of Steles of the Temple of Literature in Korea gives hope for the inclusion of this document in the MOW in March 2010, just several months before the Great Anniversary.
